Features of Alienware AW2721D

When it comes to Alienware, it is safe to say that you will be getting exactly what you paid for. In the case of the Alienware AW2721D model, you get a beast of a machine with a 27-inch LED screen which is a standard pick for many gaming enthusiasts today.

What sets this model apart from other Alienware 27 inch monitors is the additions it brings to the table. The 240 Hz refresh rate is one of the highest seen in the market today. Paired with a response time of 1-millisecond, the monitor guarantees that not a single moment of your game will be missed out.

This quick response is improved due to the low input lag. While this Alienware AW2721D 1440p 240hz monitor is already leading in the polls, Alienware decided to spruce things up and add G-SYNC support, compatible with FreeSync which helps keep screen tearing to a minimum.

The display screen uses IPS (in-plane switching) type pixelation with wide viewing angles, which causes the contrast to drop down a few points. At most, your blacks will look more grey when viewed in a poorly lit room.

1. Design

Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor - AW2721D Review

Alienware is comparable to being the Lamborghini of computers, they do everything with style, and this Alienware monitor is no exception. The monitor stand has a durable built, it is sturdy and has many ergonomic features like 130mm height adjustment, +/- 20-degree swivel, 90-degree pivot, -5/21 degree tilt and a 100x100mm VESA mount.

This Alienware 27 gaming monitor (AW2721D) comes equipped with an anti-glare coating which helps to eliminate pesky reflections.

2. Performance

Let’s get down to the brass tacks of things. As a monitor, the main feature that we need to look into is the display performance. Reviewing what has been mentioned already, the Dell Alienware AW2721D has a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, which is much higher than some of its competitors like Philips and AOC who have a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The high pixel resolution makes for crisp images while the strong refresh rate helps in creating a smooth picture flow.

The monitor comes with an in-built overdrive mode whose presence does not go unnoticed. At its lowest setting, the overdrive helps clock in at a 240Hz of refresh rate. The overdrive is active on this model throughout and visibly tends to overshoot even at its lowest setting. While some worry about overshoot causing problems with the response time, at most the grey-to-grey response time clocks-in at 4.47ms.

To the average gamer, it would make sense to increase the overdrive levels to fast, but that won’t be a good idea. While the response time decreases to 3.57ms it comes with an increase in overshoot and we start to deviate from the ideal response.

Extreme overdrive is the worst idea. While this helps you achieve the on-box 1ms response time, the overshoot skyrockets and puts enormous strain on the monitor. As to common knowledge, any response time below 5ms is more than enough to have a strong gaming experience. Therefore, keeping the overdrive low or fast should suffice.

3. NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate

NVIDIA is famous for the graphic enhancement technology that they have developed over the years. They rank high on most gamers list of equipment to purchase. While the graphic cards are powerful, they do not work well with a display that doesn’t support it. NVIDIA G-Sync technology was developed keeping this factor in mind.

A brief on this technology, the NVIDIA G-Sync is a hardware-based tech that helps manage the vertical blanking interval of the display panel. This provides gamers with a smoother and richer gaming experience. Its prime purpose is to avoid the phenomena known as screen tearing.

When first developed the display was required to be compatible with this technology. Over the years most monitors were made compatible and NVIDIA created three categories based on the performance. Amongst these, NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate provides the highest degree of performance.

The various features you may experience in a G-SYNC monitor are divided into three different sections and an Ultimate model is known for providing all three. The Validated Experience models are standard and provide adequate variable refresh rate range and no flicker.

Premium Experience is NVIDIA certified, full variable refresh rate range and variable overdrive. Ultimate HDR Experience includes the highest resolution, highest refresh rate and advanced NVIDIA G-SYNC processor. The G-SYNC Ultimate monitors are known to provide all three experiences to their users.

NVIDIA G-SYNC technology, though exclusive for compatible systems in the early years, can now run on any monitor. However, if a monitor is NVIDIA certified, like the AW2721D, you can expect the system to perform at the highest level that it possibly can with colour accuracy, high dynamic range and minimum screen tearing.

4. IPS Nano Color technology

We have come far in display technology from the early days. We advanced from black and white to colour and now the goal has become to best represent a colour in the sharpest and most accurate way possible.

To achieve this, the Dell Alienware AW2721D monitor has a wide 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut, equal to about 135% sRGB. Simply put, the colour quality is off the charts. The reds and greens are particularly well represented, increasing the overall picture quality.

5. Number of Ports

The Dell Alienware AW2721D gaming monitor comes with many attachment options, both with input and output options. The display ports include two HDMI 2.0 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4. There are four USB ports, version 3.2 (Type-A; Gen 1; downstream) and one USB port, version 3.2 (Type-B; Gen 2; upstream). For sound, your headphones or speakers can be connected to a 3.5mm audio-out jack

Side note, to access the highest refresh rate of 240 Hz, users will have to use the DisplayPort as the HDMI performance is limited to 144Hz. Also, keep in mind that the HDMI ports do not support HDMI 2.1.

6. Mounting options

When acquired, this Alienware 27-inch gaming monitor comes with a two-prong stand. The model is designed with high-grade plastic which makes it a very sturdy and durable design. It contains a cutout with easy cable management.

The monitor is compatible with VESA 100×100 wall mount which provides flat, tilt and turn/swivel movements. These mounts are perfect for screens sizing from 32 – 65 inches. As the monitor weighs just about 6.3 kgs, they are a perfect fit for being wall mounted.

7. Other Features

If you thought that the Alienware AW2721D gaming monitor was done, you are wrong. Following are some of the other features that the monitor brings to the table which are worth a look over.

> AlienFX Customizable Lighting

The RGB lighting is a technology that the gaming community is quite taken with. The Red Green and Blue LED lights are installed in keyboards, monitors and CPU decks to project beautiful colours. These three colours combined can project up to up 16million hues. In this particular model, the back of the monitor, downlight and power button are installed with these lights.

Though most systems installed with this tech run with the default set software which helps you customize the colours that would be represented.

> Gaming-Centric On-Screen Display Menu

The performance of a game is left to the graphic card, RAM and processor. Earlier the display controls available were limited to the brightness or contrast. To improve the gaming experience, Alienware provides its users with a gaming-centric on-screen display menu where the gamers can have further control of their viewing experience.

The on-screen display provides options like an FPS counter, timer, display alignment features and much more. You can create customizable game modes to experience your games at your preference settings.

> Flicker-free Screen

Flicker is a condition noticed in displays where a visible change in brightness is noticed on the screen. This condition is associated with refresh intervals and more common in CRT screens. However, computer screens are known to show the same error. It is known to cause discomfort to the eyes.

This Alienware Monitor comes with a flicker-free screen. To avoid flicker, a display screen needs to function at a 100 – 120 Hz refresh rate. The AW2721D clocks in at a refresh rate of 200-240 Hz without breaking a sweat which helps remove this error.

> Adjustable Stand

The Dell Alienware AW2721D comes with a stand and wall mounting option. The stand is built with metal and plastic combined which gives it some weight but also sturdiness. The monitor has 3-dimensional adjustability provided in height, swivel and tilt.

The height can be adjusted up to 5.1” (13cm), have a swivel range from -20 to 20 degrees and a tilt range from -21 to 5 degrees. While the height and tilt adjustable range is quite large, the swivel is very limited. The monitor can also be rotated into portrait mode in either direction due to its 90-degree pivot capability.

It is safe to say that Alienware has gone ahead to create a gaming monitor which meets all the necessary viewing needs of the user. The great colour quality is due to the 2560 x 1440p resolution and Nano IPS clour tech. This matched with a refresh rate of 240 Hz make the picture quality smooth. Gaming on this monitor is an experience, like sitting in a museum and admiring a detailed painting. It is an experience that every intense gamer deserves.
